Why Are There Waste Restrictions?

If you have a large amount of waste to dispose of then a skip is an easy, cost-effective option to help you. We want to make sure that most of, if not all of, your waste doesn’t end up in landfill. However, please keep in mind that there are some items we simply cannot accept inside a hired skip. Most of the time this is because we have to keep our skip operators as safe as possible so simply don’t accept potentially harmful items. Please read on for our simplified list of which items we can’t take, or check our terms of business page for a full list.

Our Restrictions List

Each company will have its own specific rules and regulations. If you don’t adhere to these, you may have legal action taken against you. Always double-chek with your provider regarding which items they don’t allow. Here are our waste restrictions:

Upholstered Furniture (POPs)

Items such as sofas, armchairs, and upholstered office chairs will be affected by the new regulations introduced at the beginning of 2023. These new rules change the way that they can be stored, treated, and destroyed. Persistent organic pollutants can remain in our environment for a long time which can build up in the fatty tissue of humans and animals causing major damage. If you need to dispose of anything like this please contact our customer service team for more information.

Electrical appliances

Electrical Appliances and Equipment

All electrical items including appliances have the potential to be harmful which is why they aren’t allowed in your skip. If you’re unsure whether you can put it in, the answer is no if it needs a plug, charger, or batteries to work. Please take any electricals to your local recycling center. You can find your local one here.

Skip With a Mattress

Mattresses

We are able to help you with disposing of your old mattress, however, we do ask for an extra charge of £45 – £50 + VAT per mattress. If you’d still like us to do this, please let us know before you put it in.

Plasterboard Waste

Plasterboard

This is another dangerous building material, however, plasterboard becomes hazardous when mixed with water and other bio-degradable items. This is why we ask that you only fill 1-2 bags and place them on top of the skip for the time of collection. If we find plasterboard inside the skip you can be charged up to 50% of the hire price.

pile of used batteries

Batteries

All batteries contain harmful substances such as lead, which means they aren’t safe in a skip. They are especially harmful if they leak. This is why they should be sent to a proper facility to be cleaned out properly before being sent to landfill. This applies to all batteries including AAA and car batteries.

Old asbestos requiring disposal

Asbestos

This is an extremely dangerous building material that can have serious effects on your health if you are exposed to it. It can increase your chances of lung disease and some cancers. Some of these illnesses will not appear for years after exposure. Please call a professional immediately if you find any in your home or project.

Stack of old gas cylinders for recycling

Gas Cylinders

These are very rarely fully empty, which means that can be a risk for combustion. For this reason, they should be taken to a specialist. If you don’t have one near you please contact the manufacturer as they should be able to help you.

Medical waste, used syringes and medicine bottles

Medical Waste

This can include a variety of different items including both used and unused needles, PPE, bodily fluids/parts, and any other item that could potentially carry infection. We always want to make sure that everyone stays safe, which includes not picking up illnesses from your skips. Please make sure any waste that fits into this category goes to a specialist to be disposed of.

Glass Waste

Glass

Glass is obviously dangerous when broken as it is very sharp. As we have skip operators who sort through your rubbish, we want to make sure they are safe at work. For this reason, we ask that you avoid putting a large amount into your skip. We understand that household items will always include small quantities of glass. If you have a large amount to dispose of please contact us regarding a glass-only skip.

pile of used tyres for disposal

Tyres & Other Items

There are some items, usually made from rubber, such as tyres, that we can help with for an extra charge. For any other items that you aren’t sure about, please check with your local council or skip provider before putting them in.

Used paint tins, fuels and solvents.

Paint, Solvents, and Fuels

These types of items can all be very harmful to you and others with the possibility of chemical burns and other injuries. For this reason, we ask that you don’t place them into your skip and instead, take them to a specialist facility for proper disposal.
